What can I bring to a BBQ that's cool and unusual?
People are already bringing salads, desserts, fruit salad...
A couple of people are PG so I would rather not bring something alcoholic...
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Re: What can I bring to a BBQ that's cool and unusual?
its not unusual but what about shishkebobs, somebody who always had bbq's used to ask me to always make them. I love ribs or wings but it is typical.
Maybe make a cake or some sort of other dessert
someones mom used to always bring these amazing meatballs she made. They were made with jam and something else, some thought it sounded weird but so good
ive made the spinach and artichoke dip and its sooo good

"Spiked" Watermelon!!!
Cut a small hole into the watermelon and slowly pour a bottle of vodka into it. Takes a couple hours for the watermelon to soak it all up...but it is certainly tasty!!!!!!

Re: What can I bring to a BBQ that's cool and unusual?
My cousin brough a platter to my house and everyone loved it.
It was totillas cut into strips, small red roasted peppers, goats cheese and baked garlic.
They were all seperate on the plate and everyone made up their own small tortilla. If you don't like tortillas you can used french bread.
This is how you cook the garlic
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Using a sharp knife, cut off the top 1/2 to 3/4 inch of the whole garlic heads. Do not remove papery skin. Rub each head with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon of the salt, 1/2 teaspoon of the pepper. Place the heads upright in a shallow dish just large enough to hold them. Dot each head with 1/2 tablespoon of the butter. Roast uncovered for 20 minutes. Cover loosely with foil and bake until the cloves are soft and easily pierced with the tip of a sharp knife, about 30 to 40 minutes longer. Let cool about 15 minutes. Spread the garlic on the bread with a little cheese.

I would have told her the same but she said non alcoholic
Trader Joes has this great dip that has layers for a tortilla chip. Sour cream, guacamole, beans and Cheddar cheese. They also have blue chips that are soo delish
Other than that adults just love desserts. I would also recc Brownies and rice cripsy treats or choclate chip cookies - You never go wrong with that.

Re: What can I bring to a BBQ that's cool and unusual?
Bring your slip and slide -- entertainment for all!
ETA: if you want a food item try this:
Corn Casserole Recipe courtesy Paula Deen Show: Paula's Home Cooking Episode: Country Cooking - Southern Sides 1 (15 1/4-ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained 1 (14 3/4-ounce) can cream-style corn 1 (8-ounce) package corn muffin mix (recommended: Jiffy) 1 cup sour cream 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted 1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, stir together the 2 cans of corn, corn muffin mix, sour cream, and melted butter. Pour into a greased 9 by 13-inch casserole dish. Bake for 45 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from oven and top with Cheddar. Return to oven for 5 to 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Let stand for at least 5 minutes and then serve warm.
SOO GOOD!!!!

Re: What can I bring to a BBQ that's cool and unusual?
I'm famous for this "Pesto Cheese Blossom" from Paula Deen. It's super easy and Mucho Delicious
1 (8-ounce) package sliced provolone cheese 2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, at room temperature 20 pistachios, shelled 2 cloves garlic 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves 1/2 cup fresh parsley leaves 1/2 cup pine nuts 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 ounces oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes
Line a medium bowl with plastic wrap, leaving enough overhang to cover the top. Reserving 3 slices of the provolone, line the bottom and sides of the bowl with the remaining provolone, overlapping the slices. For the cream cheese layer, process the cream cheese, pistachios, and 1 of the garlic cloves in a food processor until blended; scrape the mixture into a bowl and set aside. For the pesto layer, process the basil, parsley, pine nuts, and the remaining garlic clove in the food processor until blended. Dissolve the salt and pepper in the olive oil and mix well.
With the machine running, add the oil in a fine stream. Scrape this mixture into a second bowl and set aside. For the tomato layer, drain the tomatoes, reserving the oil. Puree the tomatoes with a small amount of the reserved oil in a food processor. Spread some of the cream cheese mixture over the cheese slices lining the bowl. Layer the pesto mixture, half of the remaining cream cheese mixture, the sun-dried tomato mixture, and then remaining cream cheese mixture in the bowl. Cover with the remaining provolone. Bring the edges of the plastic wrap together over the top and secure with a twist tie. Freeze until firm. Remove the plastic wrap and invert the mold onto a serving platter. Serve with party crackers. This will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.
Or you can make sauteed onion dip, Sour Cream, Whipped cream cheese, sauteed onions, worstershire sauce, and a little hot sauce!

Re: What can I bring to a BBQ that's cool and unusual?
I brought this to a party once and it was really good. I skipped the scallions and I'd cut down on the parsley, it was too much
Buffalo Chicken balls
Ingredients
* 1 pound ground white meat chicken * 1/2 small onion, grated * 2 cloves garlic, grated * 1/2 cup parsley, chopped * Salt and freshly ground black pepper * Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), for drizzling * 2 tablespoons butter * 1/2 cup hot sauce (such as Frank’s) * 3 scallions, green and white parts thinly sliced * Store-bought, good quality bleu cheese dressing for dipping * A couple of handfuls celery sticks * A couple of handfuls carrot sticks
Preheat oven to 400ºF.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken with the onion, garlic and parsley, and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Flatten out the meat in the bowl and score it into four portions using the side of your hand. Shape each portion into four balls – you should have sixteen meatballs in total.
Arrange the meatballs on a nonstick sheet pan and drizzle them with EVOO. Place in the oven and bake until the meatballs are cooked through and golden brown, about 10-12 minutes.
While the meatballs are baking, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the hot sauce and whisk to combine. Toss the baked meatballs in the hot sauce to coat.
Transfer the meatballs to a serving platter and spike each one with a toothpick or serving fork. Place the bleu cheese dressing in a small serving bowl and garnish with scallions. Serve the meatballs with the bleu cheese dressing, celery and carrot sticks alongside.
