Re: Dinner on Kauai
JEALOUS! We just got back from our Hawaiian honeymoon. Kauai was our favorite island (we went there first, then to Maui and the Big Island).
You HAVE TO get the "Kauai Revealed" book - it's a blue book, and you can find it easily at any bookstore. It was our bible while we were over there - such great advice on restaurants, beaches, etc. with lots of "out of the way" places. We took it with us everywhere.
As for restaurants, we really liked Duke's Canoe Club. It's just to the side of the Marriott hotel in Lihue. Right on the beach, with gorgeous views, the food is amazing, and the prices weren't bad. It's actually 2 restaurants: a casual one with a bar and a sandwich/salad menu downstairs, and a fancier one upstairs. We ate at them both, actually, and liked them both.
On the recommendation of another couple we met there, we got Thai at a place called The King and I on the east side of the island, about 20 minutes north of Lihue in Kapa'a. SO good. It's in the Blue Book too, if you want the info on that. It would be pretty far for you if you're staying in Poipu, but not if you're in Lihue or Princeville. Where are you staying?
If you have any questions about Kauai, I'd be happy to answer them. I miss it already! We're already talking about taking a 2nd honeymoon and going back.

Yea!! thank you so much for all the great advice...we are staying in Hanalei, but not at Princeville, at a smaller, less expensive place.

Re: Dinner on Kauai
Ooh, so you're on the North coast. That's the only part of the island we didn't make it to (we were only there 5 nights) but it's supposed to have the best beaches. It also gets the most rain (at night) so it's the lushest, most beautiful part of the island. I can't even imagine that, because the rest of the island is so lush and gorgeous. Next time DH and I go to Hawaii, we think we might just go to Kauai and stay on the north coast. We regret that we chose to see 3 islands in 2 weeks - it was NOT enough time for any of the islands, and we especially regret having to leave Kauai after only 5 nights.
You're close to a bunch of waterfalls too, on the east side of the island. The island is pretty small, and according to my blue book, it's 50 minutes from Hanalei to Lihue, where I stayed and where Duke's (my fave restaurant we went to) is. Kalapaki Beach by the Mariott in Lihue was one of my favorites in all of Hawaii - it has perfect waves for learning boogie boarding and/or surfing, the sand out into the water is not steep so you can walk way out in the water and still be able to stand, and at most times of the day it was pretty empty.
You're going to need a car there, but car rental is fairly cheap and you won't do too bad with gas, because the island is pretty small and nothing is too far away. You're so lucky to be spending so much time there!

Re: Dinner on Kauai
One of my favorite restaurants in Hawaii was The Beach House in Kauai, the food was delicious and they have an outdooor area where you can take picutres of the sunset.
Also, Dondero's in the Hyatt was soooooooo good and Tidepools in the Hyatt was very good too
