Re: Such a pet peeve
I assume that you are referring to a bathroom. If there is not a disabled person in the bathroom and the stall is open, then I think it is fine to use. The room is larger to accommodate wheelchairs. By law, many buildings have to offer accessibility but that does not mean a non-disabled person can't or shouldn't use it.
If you are referring to parking, it is a different story. That is a permit issue. My mother is disabled, has a permit and often has to park further away in a lot than necessary because the dope withour a permit who needs a quart of milk cant move over three spaces. THIS angers me.

I agree with you on the bathroom thing...if there is nobody (handicapped) waiting for it then what is the big deal. I do go in there but only cause there is more room. I would never take it from a handicapped person-that is just wrong. I am usually very quick, I would be out before someone had to use it

I use HC stall at work, because I know a lot of people don't use it and it is 10x cleanner than the other ones.

Re: Such a pet peeve
I dont think your peeve is stupid at all but there are many things to consider. I never thought of it from your perspective and you have a very valid and good point.
There are different types of disabilities and conditions that warrant quick decision making and stall choice. If a person is in a bathroom where the very first stall is deemed for handicap use and they were incontinent or had to throw up or had some other type of illness, you can be darn sure they would grab the first stall they see in order to maintain a level of dignity. It has happened to me with medical digestive issues and I think most people would agree to grab the first stall rather than have an accident or possibly throw up. If it is a simple "pee" thing? then yes, make a better choice. And sometimes you go in there thinking that one thing will happen and another does. Oy vey can I stop now?
I think I need a drink!

This is a sore issue with me. My Grandmother is in a wheelchair, when I go to visit her in the nursing home, she likes for me to take her out to eat. She always has to use the restroom before I bring her back. One time we were in a restaurant and I was taking her to the restroom, because she can't go alone, and someone was in the HC stall, while the 2 regular stalls were empty. I asked that if they were not HC to be please hurry, my Grandmother had to go and she is in a wheelchair. Needless to say the person took their sweet time and by the time my poor Grandma got in, it was too late.
If the regular stall is empty, please be considerate.

Why of why do people use the handicap stall when there are plenty of other open stalls? I think that is so rude !!!
sorry, had to vent
I hope none of you ladies do this
The only time I use the handicap stall is when all the others are full, and I am having trouble holding it in, and I have ascertained that there is no one who will come in to use it while I'm in there. In other words, when I'm in a resteraunt and get up to use the facilities I scan the area for people in wheelchairs. If I don't see one and the other two conditions apply, I'll use it, however if I scan the area and there is someone in a wheelchair I don't go near the handicap stall no matter what.
I've actually stood online and had people yell at me from behind that the handicap stall is not occupied. I have reminded those people that I am not handicapped. Sometimes it works, and sometimes the person behind me will go ahead and use it.

There was a Curb Your Enthusiasim episode about this.
I agree that if there are regular stalls available, those should be utilized before a Handicapped.
